[Blog Tour] Interview with Mary Weber - Author of Storm Siren

We had the pleasure of being part of the Storm Siren blog tour and we were able to interview Mary Weber about her new book Storm Siren which comes out today!

"I raise my chin as the buyers stare. Yes. Look. You don't want me. Because, eventually, accidentally, I will destroy you."

In a world at war, a slave girl's lethal curse could become one kingdom's weapon of salvation. If the curse - and the girl - can be controlled.
As a slave in the war-weary kingdom of Faelen, seventeen-year-old Nym isn't merely devoid of rights, her Elemental kind are only born male and always killed at birth - meaning, she shouldn't even exist.
Standing on the auction block beneath smoke-drenched mountains, Nym faces her fifteenth sell. But when her hood is removed and her storm-summoning killing curse revealed, Nym is snatched up by a court advisor and given a choice: be trained as the weapon Faelen needs to win the war, or be killed.
Choosing the former, Nym is unleashed into a world of politics, bizarre parties, and rumors of an evil more sinister than she's being prepared to fight . . . not to mention the handsome trainer whose dark secrets lie behind a mysterious ability to calm every lightning strike she summons.
But what if she doesn't want to be the weapon they've all been waiting for?
Set in a beautifully eclectic world of suspicion, super abilities, and monsters, Storm Siren is a story of power. And whoever controls that power will win.

About the Author

Mary Weber is a ridiculously uncoordinated girl plotting to take over make-believe worlds through books, handstands, and imaginary throwing knives.

In her spare time, she feeds unicorns, sings 80's hairband songs to her three muggle children, and ogles her husband who looks strikingly like Wolverine. They live in California, which is perfect for stalking L.A. bands, Joss Whedon, and the ocean.

Storm Siren Q&A

Describe Storm Siren in ten words. Slave girl with a storm-summoning curse. Awesome friends. Boy hottie. ;0)

2. How did you come up with the idea for Storm Siren? I was researching Joan of Arc one day when I happened across the poem "Saint Patrick's Breastplate.” It has this stanza in which Patrick is basically calling forth the elements to be a shield around him. I’ve always been in love with superheroes and fantasy, and the idea hit me how cool it’d be to incorporate Patrick’s elements into a story!
As far as the heart of the book - that emerged from my work with teens girls, including my own daughters. They so inspire me - the way they're full of life and destiny and yet also navigating a world of expectations that are incredibly high and often harsh. Storm Siren is kind of my shout out to them and to the idea of staying true to oneself and one's destiny.

3. Which Hogwarts house would Nym be in? Ooh cool question! Okay, so since you asked - I sent Nym over to take an online quiz (http://www.thealmightyguru.com/Reviews/HarryPotter/Docs/Quiz-House.html). Her result was Gryffindor. This is probably because she’s a bit of a mama-bear when it comes to children and also because she may or may not think grown-up Neville Longbottom is quite the looker.

4. What elemental ability would you want to have? The power to create chocolate out of nothing. Because seriously…chocolate. ;0) 5. What books have had a great impact on you?
The Secret Garden was my first, true book-love! Since then I’ve become captivated with Diana Wynne Jones’s Howl’s Moving Castle (Howl and Sophie are THE BEST COUPLE EVER!!), William Goldman’s The Princess Bride (which is HILARIOUS and so wonderfully witty), Maggie Stiefvater’s The Scorpio Races (gorgeous prose), Jay Asher’s 13 Reasons Why (for the power of story and kindness), everything by Dostoevsky (for the power of humanity), and whatever J.K. Rowling decides to jot down on a napkin.
